The Tremors felt in the Buttala region today and yesterday was caused by a break in the Indo-Australian plate, Atula Senaratne, Senior Professor of Geology at the University of Peradeniya, said.
Professor Senaratne says that this rupture, which takes place right in the middle of the Indo-Australian plate, has been happening quite rapidly for the past 15 to 20 years and since Sri Lanka is the closest country to the place where the rupture takes place, such small earthquakes are constantly felt in this country.
He further said that the people should not be afraid of this minor earthquake and due to the rupture of this plate which is about 1000 miles away from Sri Lanka, more earthquakes on the Richter scale may be recorded in the future.
