A Navy vessel is scheduled to leave for India today to bring back an emergency shipment of oxygen to meet the high demand for oxygen in Sri Lanka. The Navy’s vessel Shakthi will leave Trincomalee Harbor for Chennai today (16) to receive the emergency oxygen supply.
Navy Media Spokesman Capt. Indika de Silva told Lankasara that the ship has already been in due formalities for the journey and it will sail to Port of Chennai, India.
The country produces 77 tons of oxygen daily and the daily requirement has exceeded 95 tons. Health sources say that before the escalation of the Covid crisis, about 44 tons of oxygen were required daily for medical treatment, but that number has more than doubled with rising demand for Oxygen-dependent people.
According to sources, the government has taken steps to get an emergency supply of oxygen from India and Singapore.
