The remaining subjects of the GCE Advanced Level examination, which were postponed due to the recent adverse weather, will be held in early January 2026, the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Training announced yesterday. Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa said the decision was taken after assessing the disruptions caused by the severe weather across several districts.
He explained that the reopening of schools will be managed at provincial and district levels, with authorities instructed to consider the status of transportation, communication lines and electricity supply. Schools in districts that were not affected by the disaster will resume academic activities on 16 December, while decisions regarding schools in affected areas will be taken once local officials confirm that conditions are safe.
Kaluwewa added that universities, national colleges of education and vocational training institutes located in non-affected areas are expected to reopen on 8 December. Institutions facing operational difficulties due to the weather have been given the authority to decide on alternative reopening dates based on their circumstances.
