The Kandy National Hospital bid an honorary farewell yesterday (6th) to a 15-year-old CT scanner that played a crucial role in diagnosing thousands of patients and training future medical professionals.

Dr. Ganganath Rodrigo, a specialist in the Radiology Department, shared that the machine was procured in 2006 at a cost of nearly Rs. 8 million. It became a vital resource not only for Kandy but also for neighboring provinces that lacked similar facilities at the time.

“The machine provided immense relief to countless patients and contributed significantly to medical education,” Dr. Rodrigo said. He explained that its retirement after years of dedicated service was marked with gratitude and respect, involving retired doctors, nurses, technicians, and other staff who had worked with the machine over the years.

Dr. Iresha Fernando, Director of Kandy National Hospital, emphasized the importance of recognizing the machine’s contributions despite it being “just a pile of iron.” She expressed appreciation for the Radiology Department’s efforts in organizing a meaningful send-off.
