The Fort Magistrate’s Court has directed the board of directors of the Krrish Tower project in Colombo Fort to remove hazardous debris from the abandoned construction site within two weeks. This decision follows reports of falling debris from the 60-story building, which has remained incomplete and neglected for years.
The ruling was issued by Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali, who emphasized the need to eliminate any safety risks posed to the public. The court instructed the company to maintain the site in a manner that prevents further nuisance or danger.
Lawyers representing the Krrish Group proposed a 55-day timeline for removing the debris. However, Fort Police OIC Lakmal Wijeratne argued that such a delay was unreasonable, leading the court to set a firm two-week deadline.
Background of the Krrish Project
The Krrish Tower project, valued at $650 million, began during the second term of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The 3.7-acre property in Colombo’s commercial hub was leased by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to the Indian Krrish Group for 99 years at a cost of 5 billion rupees in 2012.
Initially envisioned as a “vertical city,” the project included plans for a 10-story podium with parking and luxury retail spaces, along with four high-rise towers. These towers were intended to feature residential apartments, commercial offices, and a seven-star hotel. The tallest tower was designed to reach 85 floors above the podium.
Despite ambitious plans, the project has faced prolonged delays. It was originally slated for completion in 2016, with construction contracted to China’s Zhongtian Construction Group.
Allegations and Controversy
The project has also been mired in controversy. Namal Rajapaksa, a Member of Parliament, faced allegations of misappropriating 70 million rupees from the Indian investors intended for rugby development in Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa has denied these allegations.
The court’s recent order aims to address the immediate public safety concerns while the future of the stalled project remains uncertain.
