A demerit points system for driving licences of errant drivers will be implemented before March next year, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe said today.
According to the Commissioner General, although this European style system was to be introduced earlier too, it has been pending for several years without being put into effect. He is confident that the demerit point system will help reduce road accidents.
Under the new system, the drivers would be desired for 32 offences and if 24 such points were deducted for a certain driver, his/her driving licence would be suspended for one year. 10 points will be deducted for an offence of hit and run while 8 points for speeding over 150 km per hour. For reckless driving. 6 points will be deducted.
