Minister of State for Defense, Premita Bandara Tennakoon, revealed in a parliamentary statement yesterday (24) that local intelligence agencies have identified a Catholic individual as being behind the recent unrest in the Kurundi Temple lands.
He emphasized that no international intelligence agencies had issued warnings to the government regarding possible ethnic and religious unrest, contrary to certain media and social media reports.
Minister Tennakoon highlighted that local intelligence agencies have identified certain individuals attempting to incite communal and religious unrest in various parts of the country for political reasons. The government, security agencies, and intelligence agencies have taken special measures to address this situation.
He specified that the intelligence agencies have identified a Catholic resident from the Mullaitivu area as attempting to create issues, particularly focusing on the Kurundi incident.
The Leader of the Opposition had previously raised concerns about a serious national security issue related to the Kurundi incident, urging the government to clarify the accuracy of media reports concerning foreign media warnings.
