After President Anura Kumara Dissanayake decided to dissolve Parliament early, 85 new MPs who did not complete their five-year term will lose their pensions.
Sources in Parliament say this affects both opposition and ruling party members.
MPs are entitled to pensions under the Members’ Pensions Act No. 1 of 1977. According to this law, an MP must complete a minimum of five years in office to qualify for a full pension. This Parliament would have completed its five years on August 8 next year.
