In the year 2021, 567 cases of violent crimes against women were reported and 79 women were killed, according to an annual audit report issued by the National Audit Office.
The audit report which was on the Sri Lanka Police also states that out of the 567 violent crime cases reported against women in the last year 355 were not completed by the end of the year.
Among the violent crimes reported against women, the highest number was rape and that number was 186. The complaint resolution percentage is 43 percent. There were 194 cases of serious injuries reported and the percentage of complaint resolution was 35 percent. The audit also revealed that 55 cases of female genital mutilation were still under investigation at the end of the year.
However, the accounting officer has mentioned to the audit that the percentage of crime solving should be higher than this.
The audit has also recommended that immediate action should be taken to complete the investigations related to violent crimes against women.
