President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced yesterday that the public can expect a 30% reduction in electricity tariffs a year later. Speaking at an election rally in Dambulla, the President acknowledged that although fuel prices have been reduced, further actions are needed to relieve the people. He promised a 30% tariff reduction for electricity over the next year.
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) recently submitted a tariff revision proposal to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) for approval. However, the PUCSL declined to approve the proposal, citing inadequate price adjustments. The PUCSL has requested that the CEB revise its proposal.
Sri Lanka previously increased electricity tariffs in line with conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its $2.9 billion Extended Fund Facility. A few months later, the government revised tariffs to provide certain concessions to consumers with the IMF’s approval.
