In a parliamentary session held today (13), proposed budget for the year 2024 received approval by a majority of 41 votes. During the third reading of the budget, 122 votes were cast in favor, while 81 votes were recorded against it. MP C. V. Wigneswaran abstained from voting.
The vote occurred at approximately 6:40 pm, resulting in a decisive majority supporting the budget. President Ranil Wickremesinghe, serving as the Minister of Finance, initially presented the budget, also known as the Appropriation Bill, to Parliament on November 13th.
Following the presentation, a seven-day debate on the second reading of the Appropriation Bill took place from November 14th to 21st, excluding Sundays. The second reading was successfully passed on November 21st with a majority of 45 votes.
Later, after holding the committee debate on the Appropriation Bill for the year 2024 for 19 days excluding Sundays from November 22nd, the third reading vote was held today (13).
