Colombo, January 28, 2025 – The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the European Union (EU), has officially launched the Sri Lanka Export Excellence Initiative (SLEEI) 2025. This strategic program aims to strengthen the export capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and position them for success in global markets.

SLEEI 2025 is supported under the EU’s regional initiative, Accelerating Climate Smart and Inclusive Infrastructure in South Asia (ACSIIS), which aligns with the EU Global Gateway Strategy. The initiative consists of three key components: ExpoNavigator, focused on awareness and training; ExpoScaleUp, dedicated to capacity building and export marketing; and ExpoConnect, designed to facilitate international market access through trade fairs and business matchmaking.

The ExpoScaleUp component, officially launched on January 28, 2025, aims to assist Sri Lankan SMEs in establishing a sustainable international presence. The program prioritizes key export sectors, including processed food and beverages, coconut-based products, spices and concentrates, herbal cosmetics, ICT/BPO services, handicrafts, and lifestyle products.

A significant aspect of the initiative is its emphasis on sustainability and climate-smart practices. The training program under ExpoScaleUp will equip selected SMEs, including women-owned businesses, with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop effective export marketing strategies. Participants will also benefit from interactive sessions with industry experts and successful exporters.

Speaking at the launch event, EDB Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe emphasized the importance of initiatives like SLEEI in driving Sri Lankan SMEs toward global competitiveness. He expressed gratitude for the support of IFC and the EU in this timely endeavor.

Gevorg Sargsyan, Country Manager for the World Bank and IFC in Sri Lanka, highlighted the crucial role of SMEs in the country’s economy. “SMEs are the engine of Sri Lanka’s economy. By supporting their export ventures through trade facilitation, capacity building, and access to finance, we can unlock significant economic growth and job creation. This collaboration will empower SMEs to thrive in the global market,” he stated.

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting SME development and sustainability, emphasizing its role in fostering resilience and innovation. Through the ACSIIS program, the EU aims to integrate climate-smart and inclusive practices while enhancing connectivity to EU markets and beyond.

With the launch of SLEEI 2025, Sri Lanka is taking a significant step toward unlocking the potential of its SMEs and ensuring their long-term success in international trade. The EDB will continue to monitor and support these businesses, linking them to additional export promotion initiatives and fostering their growth in global markets.
