The National Packaging Centre (NPC) of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) recently conducted an awareness workshop on packaging strategies for spices, aimed at enhancing the knowledge of exporters and potential exporters on meeting both local and international packaging standards.
More than 65 exporters and prospective exporters participated in the workshop, which was held on March 19 at the EDB premises.
The NPC, operating under the EDB, functions as a national platform for the promotion and development of Sri Lanka’s packaging industry. It supports a wide range of stakeholders, including exporters, manufacturers, designers, SMEs, women entrepreneurs, academics, and research institutions, while fostering collaboration with government bodies and industry partners. The centre plays a key role in strengthening the packaging sector and supporting the sustainable growth of agricultural exports.

The workshop focused on the critical aspects of spice packaging, with the primary objective of raising awareness on best practices to enhance product competitiveness in both local and global markets.
The resource panel included experienced Packaging Consultant W. Abhaya Senavirathna and Sanath Wanigasekara, Manager of CMC Engineering (Pvt) Ltd. They delivered a series of presentations covering the importance and functions of packaging, appropriate techniques for spice packaging, material selection, and an overview of packaging machinery used in the food industry.
Participants gained practical and theoretical insights into selecting suitable packaging methods and materials to maintain product quality, reduce waste, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
The EDB, through its National Packaging Centre, reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Sri Lankan exporters by promoting innovative and sustainable packaging solutions that add value to products and improve export readiness.
