9th Annual academic sessions of the Faculty of Pain Medicine will be held on the virtual platform on the 30th and 31st of October 2021. Faculty of Pain Medicine, as a division of the College of Anaesthesiologists and Intensivists, has functioned at the forefront of teaching and training of health staff in Pain Medicine in Sri Lanka. Pain Faculty was established in 2010 and has come to a very successful journey over the last 12 years This session could certainly claim credit for raising the status of Pain Education in our country to the level of a vitally important segment of Medical Education.

Pain Faculty has also been able to inculcate a genuine interest in Pain Medicine among both the health staff engaged in the delivery of patient care as well as among the trainees in the different health service categories of medicine and surgery. Pain faculty has also joined hands with other organizations such as the ‘Sri Lanka Association for the Study of Pain’ for conducting sessions of relevant learning, facilitating the participation of other professionals engaged in inpatient care such as those in the nursing profession. This has certainly resulted in the desired outcomes, especially in the form of an enhanced focus on pain care among all categories of healthcare personnel.

Until the recent past, pain relief modalities had remained at a rather primary level among healthcare personnel in Sri Lanka. That perception and practice, however, have undergone drastic changes among those at the frontiers of extending the horizons of health care due to hard work done by the faculty of pain medicine in pain education.

Pain Faculty admits being free from pain is a fundamental human right. That has been stressed in the Constitution of Sri Lanka, and in several global prescriptions of the United Nations Organisation. Ensuring that those suffering from pain are provided relief is a duty of paramount importance of all health care personnel and, for that matter, it is a moral obligation of all human beings who have the capacity to do so.
