Lakmal Ranabahu, an environmental activist in Kalawana has been brutally assaulted by a group believed to be connected to the Kalawana Divisional Secretary yesterday (24). While condemning the attack on Ranabahu the Center for the Study of Environment and Nature led by environmentalist Ravindra Kariyawasam said Ranabahu had raised his voice against the construction of the Kudawa Road in Sinharaja and many other illegal activities taking place in the area

According to Kariyawasam Ranabahu had been continuously raising environmental related concerns and land grabs around the Sinharaja area. Kariyawasam said it is believed the attack was carried out by a group led by the husband of the Kalawana Divisional secretary after Ranabahu had inquired about an environmental destruction being carried out with her support.

“The persons involved in this attack have not been arrested yet and if they are not arrested, we will take legal action.” he added.
