Sri Lanka’s Department of Irrigation has issued a high-risk flood warning for the Maha Oya basin for the next 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall has been reported in the upper reaches of the Maha Oya basin during the past 24 hours.
Due to this situation, the Irrigation Department has predicted that low-lying areas of the Maha Oya valley may experience high-risk flooding of a magnitude not seen in recent history.
The Department also advised the public to move to safer locations as soon as possible.
As a result, the Giriulla and Badalgama gauging stations have reached extremely high water levels, the Irrigation Department said.
There is a risk of inundation in low-lying areas of Divulapitiya, Alawwa, Katana, Mirigama, Dankotuwa, Pannala, Narammala, Negombo and Wennappuwa.
