A leading teachers’ union in the country has demanded an inquiry into the use of school children for political propaganda activities by government MP Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan who was arrested on suspicion for the murder of TNA MP Joseph Pararajasingham and was recently released on bail.

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) says that students of Panchankarni Vidyalaya in the Kalkudah Education Zone had been used to welcome Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilleyan in their school uniforms and band instruments.

Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, said that the Ministry of Education and the Government had on several occasions made it clear that school bands should not be used in meetings of politicians and that school children should not be subjected to any external activities due to the spread of the corona epidemic.

Stalin issuing a media release on the incident said therefore the use of school children to welcome Pilleyan was a serious situation. The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) has strongly condemned the use of school children in a situation where there is a risk of an epidemic. They have therefore called in the Governor of the Eastern province Anuradha Yahampath to order an inquiry into the matter.
