Former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra was granted bail by the Colombo High Court today. She had previously been sentenced to three years in prison related to an abduction case from 2015.
Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja granted the bail after reviewing an application filed by her attorney. The bail conditions included a cash payment of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. Additionally, a travel ban was imposed on Premachandra.
The bail decision came despite objections from the Attorney General’s Department, which had been raised on July 11. Hirunika Premachandra has also appealed the High Court’s verdict, seeking to overturn the three-year imprisonment sentence and to be acquitted of all charges.
Premachandra was found guilty of involvement in the abduction and wrongful detention of a youth in the Dematagoda area on December 21, 2015, using a Defender vehicle. She faced 18 charges and was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 for each charge. If she defaults on the fine payments, she faces an additional six months of imprisonment for each charge.
