The Criminal Investigation Division of the Kandy Police detained seven youths, one of them being the son of a prominent businessman in Kandy, who was accused of assaulting a police officer who broke his arm while attempting to mediate a dispute that occurred at a night party held at a prestigious hotel in Kandy.
After being produced in court, they were ordered to be jailed until the 27th of this month by the orders of the Kandy Acting Magistrate, Jagath Peiris.
Among the arrested youths, apart from the businessman’s son, there were also the sons of a city council candidate of Samagi Janabalawega, a well-known professor and a famous doctor.
The detained youths are residents of the Kandy, Aruppala, Ragala, and Peradeniya areas.
The apprehended youths were sentenced to jail until the 27th of this month after presenting a B report to Kandy Acting Magistrate, Jagath Peiris, who gave the order after reviewing the CCTV footage of the assaulted officer falling during the conflict and the way he was being assaulted.
The suspects are scheduled to be sent for identification regarding the event that took place.
The assaulted police officer had surgery at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital after breaking his arm below the elbow.
