Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Shashi Weerawansa has been sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment for using forged documents to obtain a passport by the Colombo Chief Magistrate today (27).
When the case was taken up for hearing today, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court also imposed a fine of Rs. 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa.
She was accused of submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration and fraudulently obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport.
She was first arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail.
Subsequently, in July 2020, the Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant for Shashi Weerawansa.
