A firearm, ammunition, and explosives hidden in the ceiling of an old building at Matara Mahinda Rajapakse College was found during renovation work today (18) according to authorities from the Matara Headquarters Police.
The small building, which had been closed and unused for an extended period, yielded the hidden cache.
A senior police officer stated that an investigation is underway to determine the purpose behind hiding these items. They are looking into whether the firearms and explosives were intended for a potential crime, possibly targeting a VIP, or if there was an alternative motive.
The cache included a firearm believed to be of foreign manufacture, 20 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition suitable for T-56 firearms, 138 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 31 rounds of 3.2 mm ammunition, 02 detonators, and 194 grams of explosives suspected to be TNT, as well as a 115 cm long det cord (service thread).
