As five Kandy Parliamentarians including a Cabinet minister failed to act urgently to supply emergency medical needs to Kandy Hospital , Deputy Secretary of the Asgiriya Chapter, Ven. Narampanawe Ananda Thero has mediated to raise money from a leading businessman in Kandy with a single phone conversation, Lankasara learns.
According to Dr. Chandana Wijesinghe, Acting Director of the Kandy National Hospital, Ven Ananda thero has seen the news published in the media on the Steering Committee meeting for Covid pandemic was held on May 09.
At the meeting Hospital Director has requested parliamentarians to supply of of ten beds with Oxygen supplies urgently. Ven Ananda thero has inquired about the situation from hospital authorities and has realized nothing has happened so far.
He has immediately contacted the owner of Indra Traders, Kandy Mr. Indra Kumara De Silva.
Dr. Wijesinghe said that this Businessman had paid for the ten beds with oxygen supply immediately and that the beds could be provided to patients by the 19th of this month.
Dr. Wijesinghe made this request at a meeting with Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Kandy District Parliamentarian (National List – Waytamaga) Prof. Ranjith Bandara, Minister of State Anuradha Jayaratne, Kandy District Parliamentarian, Kandy District Coordinating Committee Chairman Wasantha Yapa Bandara, Kandy District Parliamentarian. Udayana Kirindigoda, Member of Parliament for Kandy District (Wiyathmaga), Government Agent, Mayor, Secretary to the Chief Secretary of the Province and all Heads of State Institutions were present.
As patients come to the Kandy National Hospital from six provinces, all other treatment units have to be maintained as usual and patients suffering from Covid cannot be referred to other emergency treatment units, the director said. Therefore, the most suitable method is to set up ten beds in the Covid treatment unit to provide oxygen, he said.
