Vandalizing iconic Hindu statues: Nedunkerni Police arrest three suspects

The Nedunkerni police have arrested three Tamil youths from the same area who were responsible for damaging religious idols at the Vavuniya Nedunkerni Vedukkunari Lingeswara temple.

The vandalism at the temple has sparked controversy in the area. that the local residents and Tamil politicians had asked President Ranil Wickremesinghe to apportion the blame on the archaeological officials and conduct a forensic investigation immediately.

A series of protests were organized in the entire northern region against the incident, and the Tamil MPs raised their concern regarding the matter in Parliament.

Meanwhile, during an investigation conducted by the archaeological officials, they received information about some youths who were involved in vandalizing the statues of the temple. The archaeological officials subsequently made a complaint to the Nedunkeni police, where three suspects were arrested.

On the night of March 27, 2023, the President directed Minister Douglas Devananda to take steps to renovate the vandalized statues in the temple. Today, the police have been able to apprehend the people concerned who have a direct link to the matter.
