Discussions are currently underway between the two parties, the UNP and the SLPP, to decide whether to face the upcoming local government elections separately or as a coalition.

Accordingly, it is revealed that several rounds of negotiations have already been held under the leadership of UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena and SLPP’s Basil Rajapaksa.

According to these sources, it has not been possible to reach an agreement to date. The discussions began after the arrival of Basil Rajapaksa from the US.

There had been so many different views presented in this regard.

Meanwhile, some party representatives have proposed to unite the Podujana Peramuna and all the affiliated parties and join together with the United National Party, while others have suggested that they should contest separately and then join together. Another suggestion is to contest individually or separately based on the areas depending on the popularity of each party.

However, in the next two weeks, a final decision will be reached after discussing this matter, a spokesperson for the Podu Jana Peramuna told Lankasara.
