Two Suspected Gunmen in Kotahena Shooting Killed By Police

The two suspects arrested in connection with the Kotahena shooting that took place yesterday have been shot dead by the police.

According to the police, the suspects attempted to snatch an officer’s firearm and open fire while being taken to retrieve hidden weapons last night (21).


A police officer was also injured during the incident.

Providing details about the case, Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Buddhika Manatunga stated:

“A 38-year-old man named Shashi Kumar was shot at a mobile phone shop on Kotahena Street around 9 p.m. yesterday (21). Two individuals on a motorcycle carried out the shooting. The victim succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to the hospital.”

“The suspects were apprehended by the police while fleeing on the motorcycle. The motorcycle and the firearm used in the murder were seized by the police. Later, the suspects revealed information about additional hidden weapons, prompting the police to take them to the location last night.”

“At the scene, the suspects attempted to snatch the officers’ firearms and open fire. In response, the police shot the suspects in self-defense. They were later pronounced dead at the hospital.  A police constable sustained injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Colombo National Hospital.”
