The death toll has risen to 15 following the bus accident near Rawana Ella on the Ella–Wellawaya road last night. Hospital sources confirmed that the victims included nine men and six women.
Meanwhile, another 18 passengers were injured in the incident. As the bus had plunged into a deep precipice, rescue operations proved to be extremely challenging. Alongside the Police, Army, Fire Brigade, and medical teams, the Sri Lanka Air Force deployed a Beechcraft aircraft to assist in monitoring the operation.
The ill-fated bus was carrying staff members of the Tangalle Municipal Council on an excursion. Ella Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy.
