The Trincomalee High Court has ordered the release on bail of Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero and ten other suspects who were remanded in custody in connection with the Trincomalee Buddha statue incident.
The order was made when the bail applications of the group, including Kassapa Thero, were taken up for consideration before the High Court today (11).
Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero and the ten other suspects, including four monks, were arrested on charges of constructing an unauthorized hut and placing a Buddha statue within the Trincomalee city coastal conservation zone.
The suspects were produced before the Trincomalee High Court last Monday, where the State Counsel appearing for the Attorney General requested two days to file objections to the bail applications.
Granting this request, the High Court adjourned the consideration of the bail applications until today (11) and directed the State Counsel to submit any preliminary objections in the meantime.
