Yesterday (08) night, a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Morocco, resulting in a tragic death toll of 630 people, as reported by the Al Jazeera news agency.
The United States Geological Survey recorded the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.8 on the Richter scale, occurring at precisely 11:11 p.m.
Local residents experienced the tremors for a brief but intense period. Morocco’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Warning Network, however, measured the quake at a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. Subsequently, an aftershock measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded just 19 minutes later.
The affected area, with a population of approximately one million, is known for its historic palaces and is a renowned tourist destination.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Morocco hosted the 2016 United Nations Climate Change Conference, highlighting its significance on the global stage beyond its tourism appeal.
