Three youths who went for a swim in the Victoria Reservoir drowned this afternoon (17), the Teldeniya Police said.
The group had entered the reservoir from an area near the Bambaragala Temple in Teldeniya. Residents in the area managed to rescue a 14-year-old schoolboy who was among four persons swept away by the water. The rescued student is currently receiving treatment in the emergency ward of the Teldeniya Hospital.
The bodies of the three deceased youths were recovered later this evening following a special joint operation carried out by the Navy and local residents.
The victims, aged between 18 and 21, were residents of the Werellagama area in Aladeniya.
Further investigations are being conducted under the direction of Teldeniya Police OIC, Chief Inspector M.D. Chandrapala.
