Nanayakkarawasam Serukandage Vishwa Suraratne (32), from the Hapugala Mountpersonta Wattatta area, escaped unhurt after being shot by the police during a chase in Karapitiya, Bogahavella area. However, he has taken his own life by jumping onto a train.
The investigation, conducted at Kara Shikshana Hospital in Gallepitiya, confirmed that Suraratne has jumped onto the railway near Gingthota Sataramaha Temple while it was en route from Galle to Colombo.
A post-mortem examination conducted by Assistant Forensic Medical Officer CT Mahanama determined that Suraratne’s death was caused by head injuries.
A letter left behind by Suraratne to his mother indicated his intention to commit suicide and his fear of facing legal consequences after the shooting incident.
Suraratne had taken his brother’s three-wheeler without the necessary documentation. During a police encounter on Karapitiya Godakanda Road, he resisted arrest, prompting the police to fire a single shot at the three-wheeler.
The tragic events unfolded after Suraratne had a conversation with his mother, expressing his concerns about being taken to court and punished. He had been living in fear, evading the authorities.
Despite escaping the shooting unharmed, Suraratne’s decision to end his own life by jumping onto a train has left investigators and authorities puzzled.
