The government is yet to establish a police unit to provide security for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa under the existing procedures.
The former President quit his position before his term ended owing to mass-scale protests that spread throughout the country against him and his administration.
All the former presidents and the widow of President Ranasinghe Premadasa have also been provided with security through special police units established for the purpose.
Informed sources said that Cabinet approval is required to set up a special police unit for the former president who left the country following an uprising against him.
Authorities are trying to ascertain whether he should be provided with police or military protection. According to informed sources, Cabinet approval in this regard will allow the government to establish only a police unit for Rajapaksa’s security.
