The egg producers point out that the gazette notification that has been issued setting a maximum retail price according to the weight of eggs effective from today (20) has not offered any reasonable solution to the problem that has arisen.
According to the gazette issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority, the price of one kilogram of white eggs is 880 rupees. The price of one kilogram of brown eggs is 920 rupees.
The announcement also states that the maximum retail price of a white egg is 44 rupees, and the maximum retail price of a brown egg is 46 rupees.
However, Chairman of the Egg Producers’ Association RM Sarath Ratnayake says that it is a great injustice committed by the Consumer Affairs Authority not to have any discussion with the producers before issuing this gazette announcement.
He pointed out that the egg producers were the first to propose that eggs be sold by weight and that they made such a request because it would create a system that would be fair to both the producer and the consumer.
But what has happened is that the price of 44 and 46 rupees set by the government will remain the same, causing issues for both the producer and the consumer.
If the price of these eggs were increased by another 20 rupees per kilo, both the producer and the consumer would be saved. The average weight of an Indian egg is 35 grams; our egg weighs 50 grams; our eggs weigh 40 to 55 grams.”
“When the government issues a gazette notification, we cannot speak against it… but we say that the market situation is totally different. Then the gazette announcements will not be practical.
The president of the All Ceylon Egg Producers Association, R.M. Sarath Ratnayake, said
