The biggest tusker in Yala National Park, “Dala Kota,” has been found dead by wildlife officials in the Lungamwehera reservoir.
The body of the elephant was found on the 21st of this month. Reports said that “Dala Kota” has been receiving treatment for nearly two months from wildlife veterinarians.
At the time of his death, this elephant was about 40 years old and had lived mostly in Zone No. 6 of Yala National Park.
This dead elephant is the largest elephant in Yala National Park and is also well-known as an animal that attracted tourists to the park.
This tusk elephant has been unwell for almost two months now, and the wildlife officers, including wildlife veterinarian Ananda Dharmakirthi, have taken necessary measures to save this animal but failed in the end.
On the 21st, the tusk elephant was found lying in the Lunugamwehera Reservoir, and on the same day, the wildlife officials reported the matter to the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court.
Accordingly, acting Magistrate Ranjith Annada has ordered a post-mortem examination to be carried out on the body. Accordingly, a post-mortem examination was conducted on the 22nd by veterinarian Ananda Dharmakiriti with the assistance of the Wildlife Officer of the Yala National Park.
As per the instructions of Uva Provincial Assistant Director of Wildlife Upul Indrajith and National Park Warden W.J.K. Herath, wildlife officers of Yala National Park are conducting further investigations.
