The government has decided not to repeal the 19th Amendment to the Constitution altogether.
Accordingly, it has been decided to include in the 20th Amendment a number of positive features of the 19th Amendment, including the right to information of the people, including independent commissions.
The Cabinet decided to appoint a Cabinet Sub-Committee to prepare a new draft after considering the proposals submitted so far for the 20th Amendment and a member of the committee told Lankasara that the committee will commence its work in the next two days.
He said that various views and proposals have been put forward regarding the Police Commission and many other issues that have caused controversy in the 19th Amendment and that all of them will be discussed in detail and action will be taken to bring it to the 20th Amendment for the benefit of the people.
He further said that the President had instructed the committee members at the recent Cabinet meeting to take immediate steps to bring in the 20th Amendment and accordingly steps would be taken to draft the 20th Amendment expeditiously.
