The Thai Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers to address the country’s labor shortage.
The shortage has been exacerbated by the return of Cambodian workers following a recent border conflict. With an aging population and a shrinking domestic workforce, Thailand currently depends on at least three million registered foreign workers across the agriculture, construction, and manufacturing sectors, according to the International Labor Organization.
To meet demand, Thailand has planned to create job opportunities for workers from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Thai authorities noted that over 30,000 Sri Lankan workers have already registered, and confirmed that 10,000 of them will be provided employment opportunities in Thailand during the first phase.
