A male English teacher at Kurunegala Vahera Bandaranaike Vidyalaya has been arrested on charges of abusing eleven young female students in grade 5. The accused, identified as a 55-year-old teacher named Rajasingha, was taken into custody and later brought to court. He has been suspended from his teaching position and released on strict bail conditions.
Rajasingha, a resident of Mavatagama, Ambakote, Rangalagama, is reported to be a married father of two. The arrest followed an investigation into complaints filed by concerned parents, alleging that the teacher had sexually assaulted their children.
According to police reports submitted to the court, the suspect teacher had only been working at the school for about three months after being transferred as part of disciplinary action.
Kurunegala Chief Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne granted bail to the accused, who was released on two personal bails of 05 lakhs each. However, the magistrate imposed stringent bail conditions, including a ban on the teacher entering the school premises until the case is resolved.
In light of concerns regarding the actions of the school’s principal in handling the incident, the principal has been removed from their position and transferred to the Kurunegala Regional Education Office, effective from today (14).
