A scheduled festival in the Mampalam area of Tamil Nadu, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Estate citizens’ life in Sri Lanka, has been abruptly banned by the Tamil Nadu Police.
This prohibition was executed in compliance with a court order obtained from the Tamil Nadu Court, citing concerns that the festival could potentially harm diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and India.
The ban came into effect following the seizure of several slogans and posters critical of both the Sri Lankan and Indian governments by the Tamil Nadu Police. Subsequently, the police presented the case to the court, leading to the imposition of this restrictive order.
The festival, aimed at shedding light on the hardships endured by the estate communities in Sri Lanka over the past two centuries, was organized by a group of individuals, including the former Tamil Nadu judge, Ariparandaman.
In response to the ban, the Tamil Nadu court has summoned Ariparandaman and seven other key figures involved in organizing the rally. They are expected to appear before the court on Tuesday (17) to provide explanations and address the legal proceedings.
