President’s Counsel Sumathi Dharmawardena has been appointed as the new independent chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit, replacing Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who retired after 14 years in the role, the ICC announced today.
Sumathi Dharmawardena, a seasoned legal professional, has previously served as an Additional Solicitor General in the Attorney General’s Department of Sri L:anka. In his career, he has provided legal support to the Ministry of Sports and represented the Government of Sri Lanka in various legal matters. He has also collaborated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in investigating corruption in sports.
Dharmawardena has supervised several investigations and prosecutions under the Prevention of Sports Offenses Act and represented Sri Lanka in discussions with international sports organizations.
As the Independent Chair of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit, he will oversee and guide the Unit’s efforts in combating corruption in cricket. President’s Counsel Sumathi Dharmawardena will officially begin his role on November 1st.
