Statues in Jaffna defaced with election posters

The residents in Jaffna have voiced their displeasure at statues of various Tamil academics and intellectuals being defaced and covered by election propaganda posters. 

According to residents, certain politicians have even put up posters on the statue of well-known poet ‘Bharathi’ who is considered to have rendered a great service to Tamil literature.

During the last week, many politicians have even painted their symbols and preferential numbers on the roads. While the Police had to cover these paintings, Officers were also deployed to remove the posters put up at various locations violating the election laws.
