The Mayor of Jaffna E. Arnold has banned the putting up stalls selling festival goods ahead of Deepavali in the Jaffna city due to the Covid 19 pandemic. He said legal action will be taken against violators of the ban.

Noting the stalls selling festive items were allowed in previous stores on the occasion of Deepavali festival is completely banned this time.

“It is our duty to protect the public from the spread and impacts of the Covid-19 virus in the country. Therefore putting up stalls is completely banned this time based on the advice and guidelines of the health department and doctors as a series of prior measures taken by us to protect the Jaffna city and the public from the impact of Covid-19” he said.

He said anyone engaging in such businesses will be dealt with and their goods confiscated by the municipal council. “Hence, all our city residents, festive pavement vendors, outer district festive store vendors are requested to act responsibly in this situation” he said.
