The first cesarean section performed on a pregnant mother who contracted Covid-19 in Sri Lanka was successfully performed last night (31). The operation was performed by Dr. Mayuramana Devolage, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pregnancy and Maternal Unit at the Covid 16 National Center located at the Colombo East Base Hospital.
The mother who underwent a cesarean section was a Muslim woman who was part of the group that was recently brought to Sri Lanka from a Middle Eastern country. She was referred for treatment after it was confirmed that she had contracted Covid 19.
The baby and mother are in good health and the baby has undergone PCR tests and is awaiting results. Anesthesiologist Dr. Priyanthi Alagiyawanna and Pediatrician Dr. Darshika were also members of the medical team.
