Detectives in the United Kingdom have launched a murder investigation after a five-year-old Sri Lankan origin girl was found dead in south London.

The girl, named by police as Sayagi Sivanantham, was found lifeless alongside a critically injured woman believed to be her mother at a flat in Mitcham on Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the address on Monarch Parade at 4pm where they found the child and 35-year-old woman with stab wounds. Sayagi was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The woman, her mother Sutha Sivanantham was also taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition. It is believed Sutha had killed Sayagi and then attempted to take her own life as well.
