Sri Lanka mourns the sudden loss of Parakrama S. Wijewardena (76), a significant contributor to the country’s literary landscape.

Having authored and published close to 200 translated works, Wijewardena’s contributions to literature were both extensive and varied. His dedication extended beyond his written works, as he consistently shared his insights through special articles in newspapers and poetry pages, thereby nurturing the growth of literary appreciation within the country. Many of his works remain in print, a testament to their enduring relevance.

Wijewardena’s accomplishments were recognized through accolades such as the President’s Award, a reflection of his stature within the literary community and his interaction with various dignitaries in the field. Despite his achievements, he was a modest figure who chose not to seek the limelight.

A former English teacher, Wijewardena’s influence also reached the realm of education. He served as the Principal of Varella Maha Vidyalaya in Karaduawa, further underscoring his commitment to both academia and the written word.
