In a recent update, the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court that the Cabinet has decided to review the Adani Group’s proposal for the Mannar, Vedithalativu Wind Power Project. This announcement came on October 14, during a hearing for petitions seeking to invalidate the agreement between the Sri Lankan government and Adani.

The petitions were filed by the Wildlife and Natural Resources Conservation Association, the Center for Environmental Justice, and other groups. A five-member Supreme Court bench, including S. Thureiraja Shiran Gunaratne, Achala Vengappuli Mahinda Samayawardena and A.H.M.D. Nawaz, heard the case.

During the hearing, Deputy Solicitor General Dr. Avanthi Perera stated that on October 7, the Cabinet decided to reconsider the project. This decision was made by the current Interim Council of Ministers. She requested a postponement until the new Cabinet, which will be formed after the upcoming general election, can be established.

The Deputy Solicitor General also indicated that the project’s current status will remain unchanged until then. The petitioners’ lawyers agreed to this request and asked the court to update the petitions to include the new Cabinet members as respondents. The court approved this request and ordered that any government updates regarding the matter should be submitted by January 31.
