Sri Lanka is one of the countries where the number of Covid patients in need of emergency medical care with recent spikes says Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization. Speaking at the routine media briefing on the Covid pandemic in Geneva last night (15), the head of the WHO said that despite the escalation of the pandemic, everyone’s attention is focused on emergency medical assistance to India, but now Sri Lanka, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and Egypt needed such assistance. He said the world should pay attention to the spikes in the countries as well as the increase in hospitalizations.
Commenting further, Dr. Tedros pointed out that in addition to these countries, the situation in countries in the American region is still critical. He also expressed gratitude to the countries that have provided India with continuous emergency medical supplies, oxygen concentrators and hospital facilities.
The Director General of Health Organizations also drew attention to the gap in vaccination between developing and developing countries.
“I believe vaccination should go with this. At present developed countries are vaccinating low risk areas such as young children and youth. However, it has not been possible to vaccinate the people of low and middle income countries and even the health workers in those countries. This situation is deplorable. The reason is that they do not have access to these vaccines. Only about 0.3 percent of the population in such countries are vaccinated. Therefore, I request that countries with the potential to provide these countries be vaccinated at the WHO Covax facility. I would like to reiterate that such cooperation and solidarity is essential for us globally. “
