The Sri Lankan Embassy in South Korea has confirmed that no Sri Lankan nationals have been harmed in the devastating wildfires sweeping through the country. However, officials have urged Sri Lankans in South Korea to stay away from affected areas and to remain alert.

For emergencies, the embassy has provided the following contact numbers: 2 735 2966, 2 735 2967, or 2 794 2968.

Wildfires Claim 26 Lives, Thousands Evacuated

As of March 27, 2025, the death toll from the wildfires has risen to 26, with many more injured or displaced. The fires have consumed over 33,000 hectares in Uiseong County, making it the largest wildfire disaster in South Korea’s history. The flames have spread rapidly due to strong winds and dry conditions, prompting mass evacuations.

South Korea’s Acting President Han Duck-soo has described the situation as a national emergency, as over 120 helicopters and thousands of firefighters work to contain the infernos. Despite firefighting efforts, continued dry weather poses a major challenge.
