Although there is no change in the party’s stance on raising fuel prices in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP) has stated that it does not intend to fish in the shallow waters or to embarrass the government in the no-confidence motion against Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila.
Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP Sagara Kariyawasam said today(05) . Speaking at a media briefing today, he said that a decision would be taken after discussions with other party leaders on the no-confidence motion to be taken up in the parliament.
Speaking at the media briefing, Mr. Kariyawasam said that he was not referring to the decision to increase fuel prices but to the action taken by the Ministry of Energy to increase fuel prices.
“In that letter, we expressed the views of the party members. As a party that thinks about the people of this country, we have every right to do so. We will discuss this with the party leaders and take the next decision. Providing relief to the people is one thing. Embarrassing the government is another thing. However, they do not want to fall into the trap of the opposition unnecessarily on the issue of no-confidence motion. Our party stand is for the people and not to strengthen the opposition. It is a decision to be taken by the party leaders in the future. At present the country is in a very difficult situation. We understand this and will not allow any party to fish in fresh water. It tells us the primary responsibility to protect the government. We as a party are not in a position to take advantage of that responsibility, ”he said.
