SLFP decides to go alone in next elections

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to withdraw from the alliance with the SLPP due to the government’s step motherly treatment by violating the agreements reached before the last election.

Accordingly, a spokesman for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party told Lankasara that the party will contest the forthcoming provincial council elections as a single party.

The spokesman further said that the process of fielding the candidates of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party for the Provincial Council elections has already commenced and that the party has expressed its support for the decision.

He said that according to the agreement reached with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna in the last general election, the SLFP would not be able to field candidates in that election and if it had been given the opportunity, it would have been possible to increase the number of SLFP members to at least 25.

As agreed before the 2020 general election, the names of those who had been nominated as National List Members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) have been removed and the list has been nominated in the manner required by the People’s Front. The spokesman said that there was no point in remaining with the alliance.

When asked by Lankasara whether the SLFP would leave the government due to the situation, the spokesman said that no decision has been taken so far regarding leaving the government.
The spokesman further stated that although the withdrawal from the SLPP will not take place today or tomorrow, it will take place after the announcement of the forthcoming Provincial Council elections.
