The Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH), Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, stated that the country spends annually Rs. 70 billion on importing milk.
Dr. Kothalawala pointed out that although the annual requirement for liquid milk in the country is 1200 billion liters, only 35-40% of it has been met so far.
The Director General noted that the progress of milk importation has been stagnant since 2018.
Dr. Kothalawala made these remarks yesterday (12) while addressing the farming community at a farmer leader training program held at Ganoruwa Training Institute.
She also emphasized that in order to increase milk imports, it is essential for farmers to collaborate with new technology.
