Six individuals who were involved in an attack on the Thilipan memorial yesterday (17) in Trincomalee have been apprehended by the police.
Four suspects were arrested by the Chinavaraya Police, while the Trincomalee Police apprehended two individuals. Among the four arrested by the Chinavaraya Police, three are residents of Trincomalee’s Wijesekara area, and the other hails from the Sardhapura. The two individuals arrested by the Trincomalee Police are residents of Manayaveli and Sumedhankarapura.
The attack by this group took place at the junction leading to the Dhammarathana Piriven, which connects to Trincomalee’s Sardhapura Chinavaraya.
During the attack, Member of Parliament Selvarasa Gajendran, who was part of the procession, was also assaulted by the group.
Following the incident, Tamil National Alliance MP MA Sumanthiran called upon President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Public Security Minister Tiran Alas, and Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabri to take action against the individuals responsible for the attack on Selvaraja Kajendran.
MP Sumanthiran also condemned the assault on social media, and the police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
